AT&T proposed a fully managed SD-WAN solution for DeKalb County School District (DCSD), utilizing the Fortinet platform to modernize and replace the district’s legacy WAN infrastructure. Known for its strong security, scalability, and user-friendly management, the Fortinet platform integrated seamlessly with DCSD’s existing fiber network and AT&T Dedicated Ethernet (ADE), delivering a modernized WAN-edge architecture.
The solution provided greater flexibility for cloud adoption, device consolidation, and site-to-site connectivity, resulting in significant cost savings and improved network efficiency. Leveraging multiple WAN connections and selecting the optimal path for each application enhanced performance, minimized downtime, and improved overall user experience.
AT&T implemented a distributed SD-WAN architecture featuring key capabilities such as load balancing, health checks, and service-based routing policies. At the heart of the deployment was the FortiGate appliance, running FortiOS, which consolidated DCSD’s WAN-edge functions into a unified network fabric. FortiGate also prioritized critical application traffic—such as online school testing—during periods of network congestion.
To simplify operations, FortiManager provided centralized control and visibility through a single-pane-of-glass interface. With API support and Security Fabric Connectors, FortiManager integrated smoothly into DCSD’s workflow, enabling efficient and flexible management.
AT&T presented two E-Rate Category One–eligible options. Option 1 leveraged the existing core switching infrastructure, while Option 2—the recommended approach—consolidated the core switching into the Fortinet SD-WAN platform, reducing complexity and lowering long-term operational costs.

The goal of this approach is to create a more resilient, comprehensive security posture that addresses both digital and physical threats effectively.
